Drive from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula

Welcome to New Zealand!

Today you'll leave town and drive to a Peninsula lying east of Auckland, separated from our biggest city by the waters of the Hauraki Gulf.

An impressive, heavily-forested mountain range runs right up the middle of this peninsula - it’s bordered on each side by miles of spectacular coastline. Take the scenic route around the peninsula for one of the most incredible coastal drive experiences in the country (but take it slowly - the twists and turns will make you dizzy!)

The idyllic seaside village of Hahei sits on the Coromandel Peninsula's eastern side. You've arrived at the secret hideaway where Kiwi families take their holidays. With a safe, sheltered white-sand beach and a resident population of 300, it's easy to see why Hahei is such a local favourite.

Cathedral Cove Kayaking

You simply can't visit the Coromandel without making a pilgrimage to Cathedral Cove, next door to Hahei.

Accessible only on foot, by boat or kayak, you'll be rewarded for your efforts however you choose to make the journey! If you've seen the Chronicles of Narnia movies, you may recognise the setting as the ruined castle of Cair Paravel, which was filmed here. There's beauty wherever you look: at one end of the beach, the famous cathedral rock formation creates a spectacular passageway to the neighbouring cove. At the other end, a magnificent waterfall cascades directly onto the sand.

Kayak to Cathedral Cove

The dramatic unspoiled coastline is perfectly is suited to sea kayaking. On a guided kayak tour, you'll discover scenic bays and hidden coves concealing rock gardens and golden beaches, all secreted away behind the stunning limestone sculptured headlands.

Paddling through amazing sea-caves, you'll spot marine life and discover the thrill of kayak sailing. This guided tour offers great photo opportunities and is topped off with coffee, hot chocolate & cookies at Cathedral Cove!

Hot Water Beach

Just 10 minutes from your Hahei base, another iconic New Zealand natural attraction awaits: Hot Water Beach.

Deep below the sands, geothermal hot water rises up and bubbles to the surface, giving you a chance to dig your own personal hot pool. Grab a bucket and spade (available for hire) and construct your masterpiece: a relaxing, rejuvenating beach bathtub for you and your family. This activity is as "Kiwi" as it gets!

Families, kids, and couples can be seen digging their own pools in the sand and soaking in the natural waters - this is one experience that should be on your New Zealand bucket list.

The best time to visit the beach is within two hours either side of low tide - this varies according to the time of year, so ask the friendly locals for advice on the best time to go. You'll probably end up with some new best friends!

What Michelle says about this tour: The Coromandel is well known for its coastline, but do be sure to explore inland: the moody, forested mountain trails, filled with hidden waterfalls and never-ending birdsong, reveal a whole other side to this mystical Peninsula that you don't want to miss.
