Bay of Islands

Collect your car this morning and begin your day with an early departure from Auckland and drive north to the Bay of Islands - a marine wonderland brimming with unique sights and wildlife. This sub-tropical region is a stunning Maritime Park with secluded bays and an abundance of marine life.
On your way north, stop at the Matakohe Pioneer Museum and drive through the ancient Waipoua Kauri forest, whose giant trees are up to 1000 years old! You'll arrive in the town of Paihia, small and friendly and right by the Bay. With beach walks, island boat trips, oceanside trails and lush forests within easy reach, it's a wonderful place to relax after your drive.

Bay of Islands at Leisure

With 144 islands in the "Bay", it's easy to find your own little piece of paradise. Many islands have walking tracks and regular ferry services. Relax and get to know the Bay in the very best way - by hitting the water. You can swim in the crystal clear ocean, cruise around the islands, kayak along the shore - whatever takes your fancy.

The historic town of Russell, New Zealand's first ever capital, is connected to Paihia by a 15 minutes ferry ride that shuttles back and forth all day. The colonial history is evident in the waterfront buildings along the boardwalk - and a drink at the Duke of Marlborough outside on the deck is a must-do here. Perhaps do that after your Dolphin Watching tour - you will join your trip in Paihia but could be dropped off in Russell for some R & R after your tour.

Two hours south of the Bay of Islands is a small village with a lot to offer. The picturesque foodie haven of Matakana is a favourite getaway spot for Aucklanders.
Here you can while away the hours - browsing the gift shops and tasting artisanal food products. With excellent local vineyards and cafes you will enjoy the sights and sounds of small town New Zealand.

Interislander - Nelson

The morning ferry from Wellington to Picton is a great start to the day. It takes three hours to cross the Cook Strait, and as the South Island approaches you are greeted by a jaw-dropping sight: the fiords of Queen Charlotte Sound.

Nelson - A Day of leisure

Nelson is a creative town with many galleries and artisan stores. The jeweller who created the One Ring for the Lord of the Rings movies is based here, and you can even buy your own identical replica.

At the edge of town you can climb Botanical Hill to reach the geographical centre of New Zealand. It's also a great lookout point with views across the region. Recover your energy with one of Nelson's outstanding craft beers at a local brewery.

If you'd like to keep the adventure level up, book a canyoning, jetboating, skydiving or quad biking trip. One of the most popular options is a sea kayaking tour in nearby Abel Tasman National Park.

Marlborough 'Wine Country' - Kaikoura

Expect incredible wine, fresh seafood, culinary delights and gorgeous views as you drive through Marlborough, one of New Zealand's award-winning wine regions. Kaikoura ‘Serengeti of the Sea’

Kaikoura's most famous residents are the many whales and dolphins who feast on the abundant seafood in its waters. Sperm whales visit year-round, while the mighty humpback is a regular visitor in June and July.

Kaikoura - Christchurch

Leaving Kaikoura and the coast, you will head inland towards the rural Canterbury Plains on your way to Christchurch, the South Island's largest city. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Christchurch is known as the "Garden City", blessed with beautiful parks and gardens right in the heart of town.

After you settle in, why not step back to Edwardian times with a relaxing punting trip down the Avon River? It's a wonderful introduction to the city. Christchurch - Mt Cook

Mount Cook - Dunedin

Rejoining the coast road, it's time to head south to Dunedin, New Zealand's oldest city. There are some wonderful spots to visit along the coast, so it's worth taking your time today.

Why not visit the past with a stop in Oamaru? Stroll through the Victorian Precinct here, with splendid nineteenth-century whitestone buildings housing galleries and speciality stores, including a Victorian sweet shop.

Further south, don't miss the Moeraki Boulders dotted across Koekohe Beach. These 65-million-year-old natural wonders are up to two metres tall! The name "Dunedin" comes from the Scots-Gaelic name for Edinburgh: "Dun Eideann" and you won't have to look hard to see the Scottish influence in this lovely old university town.
