Rakiura Track Hiking Tour Itinerary

Lee Bay to Port William Hut

Take the boat to Lee Bay to start the journey on Stewart Island. The walk will start from the coastal track through the forest to Little River with its picturesque setting, and onto Maori Beach.

Maori Beach was once the site of a Maori village but has reverted to wilderness with a gorgeous stretch of sandy beach. You will have lunch there including time to enjoy the captivating surrounding.

Then continue along the track after lunch, past lush tree ferns to Port William Hut which overlooks Magnetic Beach. This is where to spend the night. In the evening a short walk will be made to try out luck at spotting a kiwi (sighting not guaranteed).

Hiking: 3–4 hours, 8.1km (5 mi)

Meals: Lunch and dinner

Accommodation: Port William Hut - 1 night

Rakirua Track
The Port William Hut is located in the Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island. It is sited close to the beach so suitable for fishing or swimming during high tide.

Port William Hut to North Arm Hut

After breakfast you will hike across the inland summit track through beautiful native forest. Pass historic sawmill haulers and cross short swing bridges before reaching North Arm Hut.

North Arm Hut will be the accommodation for the night and it is a peaceful location with a beach nearby. You will have time to take a stroll in the area or go for a swim.

Hiking: 6 hours, 13 km (8 mi)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Accommodation: North Arm Hut - 1 night

Rakiura Track
The North Arm Hut is located above a beach, which is sadly too shallow to swim but it does reveal blue mussels during low tide. During the night you can hear the haunting call of the endangered kiwi, whether you can spot one depends on luck.

This Great Walk is a relatively easy hike, mainly through native forest, with coastal sections.

What Chrissy says about this tour: This absolute gem of a track will delight you. The splendour of the scenery, beaches, bush and wildlife combine with a feeling of total remoteness. For those who love the feeling of being at one with nature.
