At the remote southern edge of New Zealand’s South Island lies the Hump Ridge Track—an unforgettable 62-kilometre (39-mile) loop through ancient forests, alpine ridgelines, and dramatic coastal scenery. This three-day, two-night hike combines rugged beauty with modern comforts and offers a rare chance to explore the untamed Fiordland wilderness. Whether you're an experienced hiker or a fit traveller looking for an extraordinary challenge, there are multiple ways to take on the Hump Ridge—on foot, with a guide, or even by helicopter.
A Trek on the Edge of the World
The Hump Ridge Track is located in the very south of New Zealand, near the small town of Tuatapere in Southland. It forms a gateway to the awe-inspiring Fiordland National Park—part of the UNESCO-listed Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. The trail climbs to an elevation of 890 metres (2,920 feet) at the Okaka Lodge, where panoramic views open up to Stewart Island and the vast, roaring Southern Ocean. It's a hike that rewards endurance with staggering scenery and an unmatched sense of remoteness.
The Freedom Walk – Independent but Supported
For experienced hikers seeking independence, the Freedom Walk is the most flexible option. You’ll carry your own gear and food, stay in comfortable backcountry lodges with bunks and hot showers, and enjoy access to fully equipped kitchens. Track fees include lodging and trail maintenance support, and bookings are essential. This option is ideal for fit North American travellers comfortable with backcountry hiking and navigation, while still enjoying some creature comforts in the evenings.
Upgraded Freedom – A Bit More Luxury
If you like the idea of hiking independently but don’t want to carry too much, the Upgraded Freedom package may suit you better. It allows you to leave the heavy lifting—literally—to someone else, with the option to have your pack transferred to the lodges via helicopter. This lets you focus more on the hike itself without the physical strain of a fully loaded backpack. Meals can also be pre-ordered and delivered, freeing you from kitchen duties at the end of each day.
Fully Guided Experience – Hike with Confidence
For those who prefer expert guidance, the Fully Guided option provides an enriching and hassle-free way to explore the track. Local guides not only navigate the route, but also share deep knowledge of the region’s ecology, Māori history, and conservation efforts. Meals, accommodation, and logistics are all taken care of, making this the most convenient choice for travellers new to multi-day hikes or unfamiliar with New Zealand’s unique terrain and conditions. It’s ideal for solo travellers or anyone wanting to connect with fellow adventurers.
Optional Extras
Heli-Transfers – For Time-Savers or Comfort Seekers
Not everyone has the time or physical ability to complete the full loop, and that’s where helicopter transfers come in. You can choose to heli in or out—either as part of a hybrid hiking experience or to skip the most strenuous ascents. These "Heli Pack or Person Transfers" offer a way to enjoy the remote beauty of the Hump Ridge without the leg-burning climbs. They’re particularly useful for those with limited time, or for those who simply want to see the dramatic scenery from above.
Wairaurahiri Jet
End of Tramp Upriver Experience
Rather than walking out to Rarakau from Port Craig on Day 3, take the WJet Boat out on the Wairaurahiri river! After walking our track and spending the first two nights in our Okaka Lodge and Port Craig Lodge, tramp back on the historic tramp line over the viaducts to the mouth of the Wairaurahiri River. Where you will be collected and experience an exhilarating 35km upriver ride and then cross over Lake Hauroko to the boat ramp.
What to Expect on the Track
The trail is well-marked and varies in terrain from dense beech forests and historic viaducts (remnants of early logging days), to steep alpine climbs and exposed ridgelines. The first day features a long uphill trek, culminating at Okaka Lodge where you’ll enjoy hot showers and stunning sunset views. Day two descends toward the coast with another night spent at Port Craig Lodge. The final day is a more gradual hike back through forest and past historic sites, rounding out the experience with a sense of both accomplishment and immersion in New Zealand’s wild beauty.
There are lots of board walks with steps which can be hard on the knees but keeps your feet dry. The historic points on the track such as the
Planning Ahead – When to Go and What to Know
The Hump Ridge Track operates year-round, but the prime hiking season runs from late October through April. Weather in Fiordland can be unpredictable at any time of year, so packing quality rain gear and warm layers is essential. Bookings for all options—freedom or guided—are essential, especially in peak season. Most hikers access the trail via Te Anau or Invercargill, with transport available from these towns to the trailhead in Tuatapere.
Final Thoughts – Is the Hump Ridge Right for You?
The Hump Ridge Track is more than just a hike—it’s a journey into one of the world’s last great wildernesses. With multiple ways to experience it—from self-guided freedom walks to luxury heli-hikes—there’s an option for nearly every kind of traveller. For North Americans craving solitude, dramatic scenery, and a touch of adventure with the safety net of great facilities and knowledgeable guides, this Southland gem offers a truly unique slice of New Zealand.
