Fur seals, along with sea lions, are members of the Otariidae family, distinguished from true seals by external ears and forward rotating hind flippers, which assist with movement over land. They can dive more than 200m deep and hold their breath for up to 11 minutes. This helps them to reach their favourite foods such as hoki, conger, conger eels, octopus and squid (but not the Kaikours giant squid) which tend to live very deep in the ocean.

The New Zealand Fur seal is graceful and powerful in the water (certainly more powerful than its Australian contemporary ☺)
