The village itself is small and friendly \u2013 only 500 people live here \u2013 and it is the perfect base for explorations of the Franz Josef Glacier and beyond. Together with the Fox Glacier 20\u0026nbsp;kilometres\u0026nbsp;away, Franz Josef Glacier is unique in the fact that it is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. These huge valleys of ice tumble down from the Southern Alps into green, lush rainforest \u2013 only\u0026nbsp;200m\u0026nbsp;from sea level. As a result, it\u2019s easy to hike right up to these ancient ice giants \u2013 viewing platforms and lookout points make for an incredibly scenic experience.
