After a short paddle you arrive at Browns Island, and before lunch you can take the opportunity to walk to the summit to experience spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. The island has a fascinating history, and archaeological sites such as Maori pa sites (fortified villages), gardens and settlements show their ancient occupation. Browns Bay is the home of the endangered dotterel and sand spurge (plants). The island used to be also a pig farm around 1840 but today it is a public area managed by the Department of Conservation. Browns Island is completely untouched and preserved.
