- Hollyford Track
Two tectonic plates collide forming an island, then a spectacular mountain range.
The ice age descends across the landmass which spends the next two million years being carved and sculpted. Then the ice recedes and is replaced by podocarp and beech forests.
Birds arrive and the valleys are trampled by the huge flightless bird, the moa, whose steps add a thumping bass note to a constant orchestra of birdsong. Kakapo, kiwi, takahe and bellbird add their own notes and the noise is huge.

The Tongariro Crossing is often called the best one-day walk in New Zealand.
Its volcanic terrain offers a fascinating look at a very alien environment, complete with twisted lava formations, volcanic steam vents and colorful crater lakes. - Milford Track
The Fiordland National Park is the cornerstone of the Te Wahipounamu Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.
Traversing the heart of New Zealand's wild fiord country, the Milford Track has long been described as "the finest walk in the world". Since Quintin Mackinnon pioneered the route in 1888, everyone from hardened trekkers to novices sporting their first pair of boots has taken up the challenge of the Milford Track.
