Oamaru - Victorian Grandeur with a Twist | Penguins

Oamaru is a very cool little town - once in line to be New Zealand's capital during the heady days of the great gold rush. Unfortunately once the gold was panned other port towns such as Dunedin grew in stature and Oamaru was left with an impressive collection of grandiose Victorian white-stone buildings mainly left abandoned. With deliberate intent a group of artists seized on this unique heritage and have branded the town 'The Steampunk Capital of the World'. The 'Victorian Quarter' has a dedicated Steampunk Museum (awesome) a park and many cafe's that celebrate this genre. Children will love the Steampunk park down at the harbours edge, it voted best park in New Zealand. Steam punk is a genre that celebrates the 'Art of Victorian Futurism' and this future is driven by unusual steam powered devices – the ‘world gone mad’ as Victorian people may have imagined it. Examples are machines like those in the writing of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. Kids of all ages will love this imaginative art form and so will you, a perfect excursion for your New Zealand Winter Family Holiday.

The Smallest Penguins in the World: After checking in at your accommodation - enjoy a leisurely dinner before wrapping up warm and hunkering down (quietly) to watch the Little Blue Penguins as they arrive in their 'rafts' to the safety of nesting boxes provided by the Little Blue Penguin Colony.

Mount Cook scenic flight and glacier landing - Awesome!

This morning set off for an interesting drive through the Waitaki Valley - where a series of hydro dams and lakes have been created to provide New Zealand's enviable hydroelectric power stations. Travel through the Mackenzie region to Mt Cook National Park. Enjoy a Mount Cook Helicopter Flight and Tasman Glacier Landing. Your family will return from their aerial tour absolutely amazed by the scenery and how much you can see by air.

Located in the heart of the Mackenzie region, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is part of UNESCO's Te Wāhipounamu (The Place of Greenstone) World Heritage region. Here you'll find Australasia's highest mountain Aoraki / Mount Cook (3,724m) nestled in the splendid Southern Alps. Known to Māori as Aoraki or Cloud Piercer, this magnificent mountain is surrounded by over 150 peaks higher than 2,300m along with countless glaciers, ice and snow fields, mountain lakes and ranges.

After your flight head to Ohau Lodge for accommodation and skiing. They claim to be a bit stuck in the “60’s” but in the best possible way offering a safe environment for children, old fashioned fun, slow cooked delicious and healthy food and warm and friendly high country hospitality.  Lake Ohau Lodge and Ohau Snow Fields provide the quintessential `Kiwi' experience of fun in the snow.

On the mountain, only 15 minutes drive away, the Award winning fabulous snow school instructors will take your children for fun filled lessons.  What else is needed?  There is a café on the mountain serving reasonably priced tasty food and espresso.  All you have to do is make sure you have fun with your family. The mountain is a safe place for kids.  The chair lift accesses an easy trail which starts off very wide and flat at the top.  Embrace the wide open spaces, the staff are friendly and look out for everyone and because it is a bowl, no one can get lost.
