RENTAL DURATION
Campervans
When calculating the number of days a vehicle is hired, the day of pick-up
is counted as day one of the rental, regardless of pick-up time. The day
of the vehicle's return is counted as the final day of the rental. Early
return of the vehicle does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the
unused portion of the rental.
• Minimum rental period is 5 days. Minimum rental period is subject
to change during peak periods.
• Late pick up or early return of vehicle does not entitle the hirer
to any refund of the unused portion of the rental.
Rental Cars
• Rental days are calculated on a 24 hour basis
• Minimum rental period is 1 day, 3 days for one-way rentals. Minimum
rental period is subject to change during peak periods.
Early return of vehicle does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the
unused portion of the rental. Backpacker allows a grace period of 59 minutes
before the hirer is liable for late return charges. Late return fees are
applicable as follows:
• 1 hour late, one third of daily rate will apply
• 2 hours late, two thirds of daily rate will apply
• 3 hours late, one full day rate will apply
DIESEL TAX RECOVERY FEE (CAMPERVANS ONLY)
The Diesel Tax Recovery fee will be calculated and collected on return
of your vehicle based on the kilometres travelled during your hire.
The vehicle rates per 100km are as follows:
Buzza: Nil
Coaster: NZ3.20
Quattro: NZ$3.40
Six Pack: NZ$3.70
Rates are subject to Government changes.
BRANCH hours for pick-up and drop-off
Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington:
Daily from 0700 to 1800hrs, closed Christmas Day.
Queenstown:
Open 7 days a week from 0800 – 1800 hours & 0800 – 1700
hours between 1st June & 1st November.
Pick-ups and drop-offs after branch hours may be available by prior arrangement.
(Late returns will be charged on a per day basis)
QUEENSTOWN
An airport fee of NZ$12 will apply for all hires with pick up and drop-off
at Queenstown airport. This surcharge is payable to Backpacker directly
upon collection of the vehicle.
WELLINGTON
Backpacker is able to accommodate pre-arranged pick-up and drop-offs from
Wellington if required (on request only). For all pick-up and drop-offs
in Wellington a charge will apply. Prices on application.
ONE-WAY RENTALS (CAMPERVANS ONLY)
One-way rentals are available between all branch locations. A one-way
rental fee of NZ$50 is charged for rentals between the North and South
Island where pick up is between 01 November 2005 and 31 March 2006.
FOR YOUR PROTECTION
New Zealand legislation provides limited coverage for personal injury.
We strongly recommend that all people travelling in New Zealand take out
Personal Travel Insurance.
All vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property
of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first NZ$2,500 (“the
excess”) for the Campervans the Quattro and Six Pack, and NZ$1,200
(“the excess”) for the Campervans Buzza and Coaster, and the
first NZ$1,800 (“the excess”) for Rental cars of the cost
of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including
single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, overhead and underbody
damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism.
This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle
is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage).
The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
The excess is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid
at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of
the rental. The excess will be refunded if we are successful in recovering
the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party
Claims can take months to resolve.
The excess can be reduced in most circumstances, by the purchase of Excess
Reduction Option 1 or Excess Reduction Option 2 for Campervans or Rental
Cars.

cover will be made void.
CAMPERVANS
Excess Reduction Option 1

With Excess Reduction Option 1 the hirer is responsible for the first
NZ$1800 for the Quattro and Six Pack and NZ$600 for the Buzza and Coaster
of ANY ACCIDENT COST of damage to Third Party property or to the rented
vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage,
overhead and underbody damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire,
break in or vandalism. This also includes the cost of the daily rental
rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage).
The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
In the event of an accident, your bond (imprint) will be immediately processed.
An additional bond of NZ$1800 or NZ$600 is required for a replacement
vehicle, which is payable by cash, credit card or traveller’s cheques.

cover will be made void.
Excess Reduction Option 2

With Excess Reduction Option 2 the hirer will not have to pay excess at
all for any damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including

vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage). The excess applies
in respect of each claim, not rental.

fire, break in or vandalism. This also includes the cost of the daily
rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs
(demurrage). The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.

BACKPACKER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS OUR CUSTOMERS TO TAKE EXCESS REDUCTION
OPTION 1 TO MINIMISE EXCESS EXPOSURE AND TRAVEL WITH PEACE OF MIND.
EXCLUSIONS
Standard Excess, Excess Reduction Option 1 & 2 for Campervans, the
Excess Reduction Option and PCO for Rental Cars do not cover:
1. Any water related damage, which includes but is not limited to:
a) Any vehicle submersion
b) Creek or river crossing
c) Driving through low plain flooded areas
d) Beach driving
2. Personal belongings: We recommend the hirer does not leave valuables
in the vehicle and that they take out personal insurance.
3. All Excess Reduction is void if the terms of the Rental Agreement are
breached. The hirer will be responsible for the total cost of any damage.
This will also include any damage caused by wilful misconduct (e.g. sitting
or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle) and driving under the
influence of alcohol or drugs.
4. The incorrect use of fuel (fuel being diesel or petrol). The hirer
will be responsible for any associated cost.
5. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle which has become bogged,
regardless of the Excess Reduction Package taken
6. The cost to replace keys, which have become lost, or retrieval of keys,
which have been locked in a vehicle.
7. Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle.
VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
On pick up of the vehicle, a Vehicle Security Deposit is payable. The
Security Deposit is payable by cash, Traveller’s Cheques or credit
card. Should the Deposit be paid by cash, a cash qualification process
will apply. If paid by credit card, authorisation will be gained. The
security deposit is dependent on which excess reduction option you take.
See ‘Insurance’ section of this manual.
The Security Deposit is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned
on time, to the correct location, with a clean interior and with full
fuel tanks. We reserve the right to retain a NZ$125 soiling fee if the
vehicle is not returned with the interior in a clean condition. The toilet
and wastewater tank (if applicable) must be emptied prior to the return
of the Vehicle, or an additional NZ$125 soiling fee will be retained.
Except where the Customer has purchased Pre-purchase Gas Option and/or
Pre-purchase Fuel Option, failure to return the vehicle with full petrol,
diesel and/or LPG tanks will result in refill charges. Petrol, diesel
and LPG gas refill charges will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
In the instance of Excess Reduction Option 1 and Excess Reduction Option
2, the credit card voucher will be returned to the Customer (Campervans
only).
TRANSFER
Backpacker provides free airport to Branch and Branch to airport transfer
on day of arrival and departure for our Auckland and Christchurch Branch.
Queenstown Branch is located at the Airport.
INFRINGEMENTS
We reserve the right to charge the hirer for any speeding or parking fines,
associated administration costs and/or accidents including third party
property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. The administration
fee per fine will be NZ$50.
EXCHANGE RATE / CURRENCY VARIATIONS
All credit card transactions are conducted in New Zealand dollars. Due
to exchange rate fluctuations there could be some variance in the amount
refunded compared to the amount initially charged. Backpacker does not
accept any liability for variances up or down.
CREDIT CARDS
If a credit card is presented as payment, the credit card holder will
be jointly and severally liable as a customer.
Preferred credit cards are Visa Card and MasterCard.
LICENCE
A full resident country driver’s licence, held for at least one
year, is to be presented at the time of rental. If the licence is not
in English format, an international driver’s licence is also required.
AGE RESTRICTIONS
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over. A medical certificate stating
that the customer is fit to drive the vehicle they have booked for the
duration of the hire is required for drivers over the age of 75.
MULTIPLE RENTALS
Should a hirer have more than one rental (multiple rentals) then these
rentals can be combined to qualify the hirer for our long-term rate. Campervan
rentals in Australia and New Zealand, for Backpacker, can be combined
to qualify if travel is within a 3-month period.
e.g. One 14 day rental plus one 7-day rental qualifies for the 21-day
rate.
For pick ups and drop offs on the same day, the daily rental charge for
the last day of the first rental will be charged, and the daily charge
for first day of the subsequent rental will not be charged.
Charges for additional hire equipment (tables, chairs, baby seats) will
be charged per vehicle rented.
LIVING EQUIPMENT
The Living Equipment (crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, linen, sleeping
bags, pillows and towels) for all Campervans is included in the daily
rental rate at no extra cost.
CHANGE OF DROP OFF DESTINATION
If the hirer wishes to change the drop off destination after the rental
has commenced, they must first obtain authorisation from the Reservations
Centre in Auckland. Subject to the change being approved, an additional
charge of up to NZ$500 may apply.
RENTAL EXTENSION
If the hirer wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first
obtain authorisation from the Reservations Centre in Auckland. This is
subject to availability. The extra cost of an extended rental must be
paid by credit card over the telephone on confirmation of the rental extension.
Failure to obtain authorisation will result in a fee of up to NZ$500 in
addition to the daily rate.
ROAD RESTRICTIONS
Campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen or well-maintained roads.
No vehicle shall be driven on Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile
Beach (Northland), Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook), Tapu-Coroglen Road (Coromandel
Peninsula and North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula).
Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle
movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions.
ON-ROAD ASSISTANCE
Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure,
must be reported to Backpacker as soon as possible, and within 24 hours
in order to give Backpacker the opportunity to rectify the problem during
the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation.
We do not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.

REPAIRS
Repairs up to NZ$100 may be affected without authorisation and will be
reimbursed. For amounts over NZ$100, Backpacker will need to be informed
in advance. Repairs will be approved provided the hirer was not directly
responsible for the damage. Receipts must be submitted for any repair
or the claim will not be paid.
CHANGE OF VEHICLE
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through Backpacker reserves the
right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification
and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and
does not entitle the hirer to a refund.
VEHICLE CATEGORY
Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.
VOLUNTARY DOWNGRADE
Should the hirer decide to take a smaller vehicle than booked they will
not be entitled to any refund.
DISCRETION
Backpacker reserves the right to refuse any rental at its discretion.
ANIMALS
No animals are permitted in our vehicles, excluding guide dogs.
PERSONAL AND COMPANY CHEQUES
Personal and Company cheques will not be accepted as payment for rentals
at the time of pick-up. These must be paid to Backpacker 14 days prior
to commencement of rentals. Personal or Company cheques are not acceptable
as the vehicle security deposit.
DISCLAIMER

only of the vehicle depicted. Variances in the vehicles offered for rental
may occur due to substitutions made by Backpacker or modifications and/or
upgrades to the vehicle design made by the manufacturer
