Arrive at Pakiri for a 10.00am departure on a full day’s ride.

DAY 2

Approx. 5 hours riding

After a big breakfast we saddle up for a full day ride up and over Te Arai Point.

  • Enjoy magnificent views of the islands from the trail.
  • Learn how our ancestors followed the call of the whales and landed their waka (canoe) near here.
  • Ride through pine forest, native bush and along the beach.
  • Overnight accomodation in beach cabins, beach house or farm house.

DAY 3

Approx. 5 hours riding

After breakfast, depart on a full day ride to the Maori Marae at Leigh.

  • Travel over beautiful farmland down to the small fishing township of Leigh.
  • Stop for lunch at the Seafriends Café and aquarium.
  • Take a short ride on to Omaha Marae, a genuine Maori marae still run on the traditions of the past.
  • As is customary on a marae, we sleep in the meeting house on mattresses on the floor. You will be able to talk with the locals and learn about life on the marae now and in the past.
  • If the marae is not available or we have less than 6 people, we will stay at the Leigh Sawmill, a lovely café, restaurant and backpackers accomodation in an old historic sawmill.

DAY 4

Approx. 5 hours riding

After a hearty breakfast we begin our ride back to Pakiri.

  • Stop for lunch at Te Kiri’s Pa.
  • Descend to the beach for a brisk gallop along the sand.
  • Ride through the dunes and along the estuary, encountering a wonderful variety of native birds.
  • Return to Pakiri over hilly farmland, with an opportunity for a quick ride through native forest at Whangaripo.
  • Depart Pakiri after a cold drink, tea or coffee with your guide or your hosts.
