QUEENSTOWN, CARDRONA VALLEY, WANAKA

Today our first discovery is nestled beside the Arrow River - the postcard-perfect village of Arrowtown, where the pioneer gold mining era comes alive. Continuing on we drive into tussock country and climb the road into the Crown Range looking out to sweeping views of the Gibbston Valley. We make a stop at the historical Cardrona Hotel before continuing on to a Wanaka homestead for a delicious lunch.

Following lunch there is time for leisure. Your hotel is next to Lake Wanaka and there is a great bike trail and walkway close by.

5
FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER

We cruise the road beside Lake Hawea, passing by the head of Lake Wanaka and admiring the pristine mountain scape of Haast Pass in Mt Aspiring National Park. We take a stroll along a walking track that weaves through native beech forests and reveals waterfalls and turquoise pools. Moving on from the mountains, we wind our way along the riverside to Haast where a visit to the local Department of Conservation Centre gives insights into the region's history and unique flora and fauna. Venturing further north through the ancient emerald rainforests of the Westland World Heritage Park, we stop at Ship Creek to stretch our legs. Lake Matheson is well known for crisp reflections of the Alps on calm days and at Franz Josef we see the impressive glacier flowing down from the mountain tops.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation Franz Josef - 2 night

6
OKARITO LAGOON Bird Sanctuary

We journey seawards to the coast for a visit to the quaint and remote settlement of Okarito, situated beside the Tasman Sea and the Okarito Lagoon. You have the option of a kayaking safari on the calm waters of the lagoon - paddle amongst rainforest and rare native birds and take in superb views to Aoraki Mt Cook in the distance. Other ways of enjoying this World Heritage Park include a helihike of the glacier or a scenic flight above the Southern Alps in the afternoon.

At the day's end there is nothing better than a relaxing soak in the hot pools at Franz Josef (optional). Tonight we dine in the village.

Meals: Breakfast

7
PUNAKAIKI - Wild Coast and Unusual Formations

The road continues north along the coast, past mirror lakes, rivers and constant glimpses of the Southern Alps in the distance. Arriving in Hokitika you have the chance to see artisans at work in the many craft stores - the greenstone (Pounamu) carving is always a favourite. A beautiful coastal highway retraces the steps of ancient Maori along old Pounamu trails and we follow the route to your seaside hotel at Punakaiki. The ornate nikau palms here are a splendid feature on the wild coastline. Nearby is a major West Coast attraction – the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks - great stacks of limestone in spectacular formations complete with erupting blowholes. This evening we celebrate our journey at Jacob’s restaurant in our hotel.

Accommodation Punakaiki - 1 night

8
ARTHUR'S PASS National Park | CHRISTCHURCH

Returning a short distance back down the coast we journey through the Otira Gorge on an amazing cantilevered road, winding beneath the towering mountains to Arthur’s Pass National Park. Pausing at the lookout you can watch the mischievous behaviour of keas - one of several native parrot species. Get some fresh air on walks through the beech forest at Arthur’s Pass village and the awesome rocky pastures of Castle Hill before we descend Porter’s Pass down onto the Canterbury Plains. Here we come to Christchurch, New Zealand's second largest city and you will arrive at your accommodation in the late afternoon.
