Welcome to Wellington

‘Haere Mai’ … Welcome to New Zealand!

Upon arrival in Wellington you will be met by a tour representative and transferred to your hotel. Depending on what time you arrive, you will then have some time to explore. Visit Te Papa, New Zealand's national museum, take a walk along Lambton Quay and immerse yourself in the city's famous coffee culture or meander along the waterfront following the Wellington Writer’s Walk - quotes from Kiwi writers are carved in large stone sculptures. This evening meet your Guide and fellow travellers for a welcome drink and dinner at your hotel.

WELLINGTON - Our cool little Capital

Today you are free to experience the sights and sounds of Wellington as you wish. Perhaps join a tour of New Zealand’s Parliament buildings and the ‘Beehive’ or take a ride on Wellington’s famous cable car up to Kelburn lookout for stunning views of the city. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences. This evening why not venture down to Courtenay Place or Cuba Street and dine at one of Wellington’s tucked-away bars or quirky cafés.

Great Lake Taupo

Travel along the rugged Kapiti Coast, past the dairy farms of the Manawatu through to Tongariro National Park. In a country of contrasts, perhaps nothing is more striking than the three peaks rising starkly from the surrounding plateau of tussock and near-desert. Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, the three active volcanoes that make up the National Park, are popular among visitors year round. The stunningly blue fresh water of Lake Taupo awaits you. Before arriving at the hotel, you will stop in to view Huka Falls and you will pass the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station.

Rotorua - The Pacific Rim of Fire

There’s time to explore the township of Taupo before continuing on to cultural Rotorua. Here you will gain insight into local Maori culture and history with a special Cultural Evening to experience the local customs as well as learn a few words. This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi dinner, a meal cooked in the ground using geothermal steam. See the Hangi pit and savour the unique flavours that the Maori have enjoyed for hundreds of years.

Today begins with an Agrodome Sheep Show. Witness the art of sheep shearing, sheepdog trials, cow milking and even a sheep auction. From here your next stop is Rainbow Springs Nature Park where you'll discover native flora that grows around the crystal clear mineral water springs. Keep your eyes open because you might spot a kiwi or two! To complete your day you’ll visit the Whakarewarewa Living Village for more insight into traditional Maori life and how they interact with the geothermal activity in the area.

Coromandel Peninsula

We make our way to the famous Waitomo Caves to visit Cave World, for an exclusive 5 star Eco glowworm experience. It’s just a short walk through breath-taking New Zealand native bush before your guide sets the scene for a cave experience, where you’ll see glowworms and cave formations and get to appreciate the beauty of Footwhistle Cave. Next stop is the dairy farming community of Matamata before a delicious lunch at Longlands Farm countrystyle restaurant. Now we’re off to the Coromandel Ranges to Puka Park Resort, where you’ll stay in Tree Hut Chalets, set among the native bush.

Auckland

If you are an early riser, why not take a stroll down to the golden sands of Pauanui Beach and dip your toes in the swirling surf. From the Coromandel you’ll travel to New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland. Take an afternoon sightseeing tour and then the rest of the day is at leisure. Visit the grand  Sky Tower for 360° views of the region and surrounding volcanic hills. Amble down Queen Street to the main shopping precinct or on to the Viaduct Harbour and the Auckland Waterfront region. This recently developed area of central Auckland has cafés and restaurants galore. Take a seat in the sunshine, enjoy a glass of one of New Zealand’s famous Sauvignon Blancs and watch the maritime activity on Waitemata Harbour.

Bay of Islands

Travel to Orewa and the scenic Hibiscus Coast, the birthplace of Sir Edmund Hillary. Then continue to the Waipoua Forest, a sanctuary that is home to many native trees including the largest Kauri tree in existence, Tane Mahuta (over 2,000 years old). A Maori guide will walk you through the native bush and explain the history and legend behind the mighty Kauri. Head to your waterfront resort in the heart of the beautiful Bay of Islands. Tonight it’s dinner at the resort.

Russell |a Day of Leisure

This morning you’ll take a ferry across the harbour to historic Russell, where a local guide will take you on a walking tour of the first European settlement and what was once the first capital of New Zealand. The rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps head out on to the water on a dolphin watching cruise, and maybe even jump in the water for a swim with these magnificent creatures. Experience sailing aboard a historic tall ship or enjoy wine tasting around Kerikeri. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences.

'Hole in the Rock' Cruise

You’re off to the Bay of Islands Maritime Park where you’ll take a cruise to the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’, and see the historic Cape Brett lighthouse, as you explore some of the 144 islands in the bay. Later you’ll have some time in Paihia to check out the local craft shops, do a spot of shopping or go for a walk along the beachfront. This afternoon you will drive back through the small towns of Northland, over the Harbour Bridge and into Auckland city. Celebrate your last night together tonight at a farewell dinner.
