Auckland - Rotorua Lakes 12km (7,8 Mi) /6 hours hiking

Your first day starts with a short introduction from your guide before travelling to Rotorua. You will have a short coffee break on the way at 9.00 am. Rotorua is not just famous for its thermal areas, but also for its beautiful lakes, rivers and forests. It is known for its fascinating Maori culture and early European history including the tragedy of the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption that destroyed a Maori village.

Today, you will explore one of the stunning thermal parks and walk through this breath-taking area on either a lake or river track before heading back to your lodge in Rotorua. In the evening you can relax at the lively local bars and restaurants in town and get to know the other travellers who have joined you on the trip.

Includes: Lunch

Accommodation Rotorua - 1 night

Lake Waikaremoana 12km (7,8 Mi) /4 hours hiking

This morning we leave Rotorua and head east to beautiful Urewera National Park. There will be a coffee break at a Tuhoe settlement, one of a few places in New Zealand where Maori is the first language.  After one more hour we arrive at Lake Waikaremoana, where our hike starts.  Following the track along the peninsula you’ll get to enjoy exceptional views over the lake before arriving at your campsite for the night, situated above a quiet beach.

Enjoy a cooked meal in tranquil surroundings and if you are lucky you may be able to hear the sounds of a Kiwi in the night.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation Waikaremoana - 1 night

Lake Waikaremoana 3km/2 hours rowing, 10 (6,3 Mi) km/3 hours hiking

Your day starts with a 2 hour hike through the beech forest which fringes the lake. When arriving at our next hut, a water taxi will pick you up and take you on a cruise under the dramatic Panekiri Bluffs. There is the option for those who prefer to relax, can stay at the hut and get picked up by the water taxi later. We all have lunch at the camp next to the wharf before getting into row-boats (weather permitting). We row out into this tranquil lake to a tiny island situated right in the middle. Take the time to enjoy the fascinating birdlife and untouched nature that surrounds you. If the weather is not suitable, the group simply walks further around the lake, following a loop track back to the Park Information Centre. Afterwards, we walk back to camp for a well deserved dinner.

Taupo - with Natural Hotpools 4km (2,9 Mi) /2 hour hiking

Day 4 begins with a 30 minute hike up to stunning Lou’s Lookout. Climbing up through ‘cloud forest’ filled with soft mosses and lichens we start to reach above the bluff. Our view becomes better and better as we climb higher finally enjoying the view over Lake Waikaremoana and beyond. We do a quick stop at the visitor centre and explore the waterfall track before driving south to the largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Taupo.

Lake Taupo is 600 sq km, a volcanic crater created in 186 AD from the largest explosion known to humankind.
On the way to Lake Taupo there are several possibilities to enjoy natural hot rivers and a stop at the mighty Huka Falls. In the evening we may choose to grab takeaway food (own cost) on the beach of Lake Taupo before continuing our drive to Tongariro National Park.

Accommodation Tongariro - 1 night

Tongariro National Park 4km (2,9 Mi) /2 hours hiking

Tongariro National Park is New Zealand’s first National Park, gifted to the people of New Zealand by a far-sighted Maori chief who saw this as a way of protecting the tapu (respect, sacredness, preciousness), of the land and volcano summits.

We set off on our hike through the tussock grasslands and over the volcanic hills to a hut set amongst native forest. We enjoy lunch at the hut before continuing on the track along stony deserts, reaching the second hut situated at 1,400m showcasing beautiful views over Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The landscape is extraordinary here, shaped by the active volcanoes and previous lava flows creating these valleys. Stay the night in an alpine hut with likeminded travellers.

Includes: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation Tongariro - 1 night

Tongariro National Park 15km (9,6 Mi) /6-8 hours hiking

The day starts with a hike through what seems to be another world, contorted by old lava flows and ash fields. We climb higher on the track which takes you up to the stunningly beautiful Emeralds Lakes for your lunch stop. After lunch we cross the plateau hiking through more lava valleys, steaming explosion craters with volcanic peaks either side. The National Park is unlike anything else found in New Zealand. If the weather permits, there is the possibility to climb on one of the volcanic peaks. Your day will end at a lodge located inside the National Park, where you can relax and have a delicious dinner.

Includes: Breakfast and Lunch
