Your questions answered:
Why
Andy Belcher?
You won’t often find
award winning photographer and photojournalist Andy Belcher without a
camera in hand - and two or three spares in his suitcase. As one of the
world’s top underwater and adventure photographers he travels far
and wide to collect his stunning images.
His schedule has included dive trips to South Pacific destinations, adventurous
jaunts around New Zealand, a steamy journey into the Malaysian jungle
and close encounters with over-active volcanoes. Andy is a Qualified PADI
Dive Instructor and was awarded the SSI Pro 5000 award for services to
diving.
To get dramatic results he is prepared to go where others
fear to tread and loves the challenges of his job. “I constantly
strive for images that are artistic and different…and that are better
than anything I’ve done before.”
Some people have a flair for teaching. They can take
the most complex subjects and explain them with such clarity they are
easy to grasp. Such a teacher is Andy Belcher. He brings the rare combination
of an artists mind with a proven creative flair to his underwater photography
and the way he passes on his skills and experience to others. One of his
favorite subjects is explaining how to take close-focus, wide-angle pictures
- a difficult technique to master - but he is also a master of all the
other disciplines necessary to make a good underwater photographer. In
particular, he is one of the few who can talk lucidly about composition
- another topic which most people find difficult to explain.
Why The Poor Knights?
The Poor Knights is possibly the world's best destination
for learning underwater photography! Is that an idle boast or is it really
true? Well, we have numerous islands in the Poor Knights, 70 dive sites
in day-range, many species of coral and around 3,000 marine species! You
can see everything here from tiny nudibranches, and shrimp to sting rays
and sharks! Our diving is warm-water (average 22C during summer), with
great visibility (average 25m) and generally excellent surface conditions.
The Poor Knights deep walls provide many wide-angle possibilities, while
Nursery Cove and the rock gardens offer endless macro opportunities. The
night diving is among the richest to be found on earth and there's even
2 wrecks in the bay to give you a chance to try out new angles and lighting.
Most importantly, the Poor Knights is not a crowded destination, where
another diver gets in the way, just as a Toadstool Grouper is opening
his mouth for your perfectly positioned camera!
Who should come?
