NorthlandNorthland

The east coast of Northland comprises of 155 Miles (250 kilometres) of coastline that offers the avid surfer the ultimate playground. Discover the beautiful bays, islands, reefs and beaches available. The West coast of Northland has two enormous beaches which make up most of the area. They are exposed to the Tasman Sea and the powerful weather systems makes it known for rough seas. Between the two beaches of 90 Mile Beach and Ripiro Beach you'll find remote areas of huge headlands, isolated harbours and dense rainforest - this is where you will find renowned Shipwreck Bay.

Mangawhai Heads

One of the most popular spots which we recommend is Mangawhai Heads. It features a range of breaks with left and right peaks. Mangawhai Bar offers a gnarly left-hander, and occasionally a short hollow right. On a good day you can expect a hollow wall which has a peel of 328-492 ft (100-150m).

Ahipara Beach/Shipwreck Bay

Another favorite is Ahipara Beach, a variable beach break producing great waves perfect for those learning to surf. Optimum size is about 2-4ft (5-1m). If you’re after more waves then head south to Shipwreck Bay for some of the best left hand points in the country!

Tutukaka

Travelling east from Whangarei you will find the beautiful coast of Tutukaka with its rocky shores, pristine white sand beaches and stunning bays. Tutukaka is suitable for beginners through to the experienced surfers; the best surfing spots being Sandy Bay and the Ngunguru Bar.
