Nikau
Cave is off the beaten track and like a hidden treasure,
although only 90minutes drive from Auckland. It is located
in the beautiful Waikaretu Valley, a mixed farming area
on the west coast south of the Waikato River mouth.
This is dramatic limestone country, (the scene of Weathertop
Hollow of LO.T.R), and the cave is a one kilometre visual
feast of glowworms and stunning formations. A shallow
stream runs through the cave and at one place must be
crawled in, so an adventurous spirit and moderate fitness
is required.
Visit Nikau Cave en route to Rotorua
(3 hours) or the Coromandel (1 ¾ hours). Or stay
a night in the private cabin accommodation to give yourself
more time to enjoy the farm, walks and gardens. To complete
your day in the country there are two fire-heated baths
by the cabin from where you can stargaze and savour
a New Zealand wine.
